Every year, on January 29th, National Puzzle Day celebrates anything and everything to do with puzzles! Ever since their inception, in Ancient Egypt, puzzles have captured our attention. And while the variety and complexity has come a long way since the days of the Egyptians, our insatiable desire to solve puzzles has stayed the same. So, in honor of National Puzzle Day 2022, let’s take a look at puzzles, puzzles, and more puzzles!
National Puzzle Day is, first and foremost, a day to celebrate our love for puzzles! Of course, the pursuit of solving puzzles is an every-day activity for many of us, but it’s still nice to have a special day where we can all stop and take a moment to recognize the joy of puzzles. Through social media, National Puzzle Day also gives us a chance to share our passion with other puzzle solvers, providing the chance to learn new games, and make new friends!
National Puzzle Day is perfect for anything to do with puzzles! You can enjoy a Sudoku on your own, or curl up on the couch with a loved one and work on a Crossword. You can even engage in a digital puzzle, like a game of Words With Friends, with someone across the globe! Then, once you’ve reached a break in the fun, go onto social media and look for the tag #NationalPuzzleDay, to interact with, and learn from other puzzle lovers like yourself!
We all have our favorite types of puzzle, the one which we go to almost every day. But, there are so many more options out there! Perhaps you have a favorite which you haven’t even had a chance to try, yet. That’s the beauty of National Puzzle Day, it gives us a chance to dig into those otherwise unknown types of puzzle. Here are a few kinds of puzzles, to see if any strike your fancy.
Word Puzzles, anything which involves manipulating or discovering words, are a great way to build your vocabulary and language skills. Some classic word puzzles are crosswords, word searches, and word scrambles. If board games are your thing, Bananagrams, and Boggle, are also old favorites when it comes to word puzzles. And, if you’re looking for something new, there’s always an up-and-coming word app taking the world by storm! But, in our humble opinion, there’s no better option for a word puzzle than an exciting game of Words With Friends!
Brain Puzzles are those which make you understand the relationship between shapes, colors, numbers, or words (in the form of riddles.) Solving Brain Puzzles often relies on the discovery of a trick which, once learnt, will unlock the Brain Puzzle rather quickly. However, managing to find that secret can often be quite agonizing, in the best possible way!
Crossword Puzzles are a unique take on Word Puzzles. Most other Word Puzzles, such as Words With Friends, give you a pool of letters to work with and ask you to find a word. But, Crossword Puzzles give you a clue, with a specific word in mind. Crossword Puzzles can be fiendishly difficult, but it is tremendously satisfying when everything begins to fall into place. (They can, however, be equally frustrating when you have a wrong answer somewhere in the puzzle, but you just don’t know where!)
The world of Jigsaw puzzles is colorful and complex, delighting solvers of all ages. A Jigsaw puzzle can be a perfect gift for a young child, allowing them to begin to understand the relationship between physical shapes at a much earlier age than any of the other puzzles listed here could be utilized. However, Jigsaw Puzzles have the ability to be scaled beautifully, adding stunning visuals and increasing word count to become a challenge for even the most advanced puzzle solvers. Everyone seems to have their own system when it comes to solving Jigsaw Puzzles, what’s yours?
Besides simply having fun, daily puzzle solving gives you a chance to exercise your brain! Solving puzzles boasts a wide array of mental benefits. They can be used as stress relief, helping you unwind after a long, tiring day. The constant exposure to new and exciting words in word puzzles can help you build your vocabulary. Any puzzle which requires complex problem solving will help with your concentration (and, obviously, problem solving skills!), as you will need to focus in order to find the puzzles’ solutions. And, with the advent of apps, such as Words With Friends, that allows you to share your puzzle-solving experience with friends worldwide; building and nurturing social bonds!
If you’re looking for a new puzzle with which to celebrate the Day, we have a few suggestions for you! First of all, why not break out a game of Words With Friends? There are also a ton of free online puzzles you can check out. Wordle is blowing up social media channels right now, so why not get in on the fad? The New York Times also has a Games section on their website which provides a variety of word and puzzle games. There are so many options out there for new and exciting games to check out, so get out there and solve!
Whether you have a favorite puzzle which you play every day, or are looking for a new challenge, make sure to get solving in order to celebrate this National Puzzle Day 2022!
